The remark by PM Lee Hsien Loong that a two-party system will not work here must be taken in the proper context. He is probably confused that PAP is Singapore or vice versa.
Singapore is bigger than the PAP and that must be the premise for Singaporeans to begin their journey to establish a first world Parliament at the coming General Elections.
The PAP may have problem attracting enough talents but that does not mean Singapore has no talent! There are plenty of talents lurking out there. These people just do not want to join PAP even though the MP job can be guaranteed! That speaks a lot about the image problem facing the ruling party.
The search for the 4th generation leaders for Singapore is not the sole responsibility of the ruling party. That responsibility lies with the electorate. Telling the voters that the 4th generation leaders are amongst the current batch of new PAP candidates is just plain political marketing. It is just selling its own renewal process - nothing more.
The wind of change is blowing strong across the world. The PAP should learn to accept the reality that it has lost some of its shine and appeal. There is nothing wrong with that and the sooner the ruling party accepts the reality, the better it is for Singapore.
If the PAP refuses to embrace the change in the mindset of the electorate and uses all ways and means to maintain its overwhelming majority in Parliament, it may find itself at the losing end. It may end up alienating the silent majority and frustrating an already disempowered generation further.
It may also end up accelerating the birth of a multi-party Parliament not by choice but by the sheer anger and frustration of an electorate whose support for the ruling party has been taken for granted one too many times.
Are you ready for change? I am and it is by choice. I want a first world parliament in the making come polling day. What about you?
